The History of St. Martin’s in the Pines

1954

1954 – The Beginning

Rev. David Cady Wright wanted his parishioners to have a better place to live out their later years than what he was visiting in Birmingham, AL.

1954 – Funding the Dream

Writing to wealthy friends

By the end of that same year, Rev. David Cady Wright had reached out to wealthy friends outside of Alabama to assist in funding his dream.

1955

1955 – Signing the Charter

Signing the charter

Clergy and layman from 7 Episcopal Parishes signed the charter to set Rev. Wright’s dream into motion.

1955 – Episcopal Support

Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama

The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama signed that the Episcopal name could be used, but due to the great depression, the church could not assist financially.

1957

1957 – Funds are raised

Funds were raised, the land was purchased, and construction began.

1959

1959 – Construction begins

1959 – Construction begins

Construction began on Alabama’s first large-scale modern home designed solely for housing senior citizens.

1959 – Doors Open

First residents of St. Martin's in the Pines

Doors opened in August to the first residents of St. Martin’s in the Pines.

1959 – Dedication

In September, the New Episcopal Home for Aged, St. Martin’s in the Pines was dedicated.

1965 – Friends Fund

Friends Fund was created in 1965.

1979

1979 – Woodside

1979 – Woodside

Woodside dedicated July 15, 1979.

1986

1986 – The Arbors

The Arbors

The Arbors is dedicated on October 23, 1986.

2002 – Evergreen

2002 – Evergreen

Evergreen dedication May 2002.

2008 – The Cottages Phase 1

2008 – The Cottages Phase 1

October 2008 Opening of Phase 1
