It’s been more than a year since COVID-19 abruptly put a halt to life as we once knew it. Since then, the world has evolved greatly, with everyone adapting to a “new normal” of social distancing, wearing masks, communicating over video chat, and sanitizing everything. As we adjusted to a life of quarantines and lockdowns, scientists were hard at work developing vaccines to eradicate the virus.

The U.S. created Operation Warp Speed, a full-scale effort to rapidly develop and distribute a COVID-19 vaccine free to all. A long-awaited glimmer of hope arose in late 2020 when both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were approved for distribution in the United States. Shortly after, a one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine was also made available.

With individuals living in nursing homes and other similar group settings being one of the first groups of people to receive access to the vaccine, the trajectory for senior living communities changed dramatically along with it. Now that the vast majority of senior living residents and employees are fully vaccinated and largely protected from COVID-19, the tides are turning for senior living communities and their residents.

As of April, St. Martin’s in the Pines is well on its way to getting back to pre-COVID operations. In accordance with CDC guidelines that allow unvaccinated individuals without risk of severe COVID-19 to visit indoors with fully vaccinated individuals, St. Martin’s has resumed indoor visitation. Residents are able to invite family and friends over the age of 18 to visit in their rooms in parties of two per resident. The return of in-person visitation has already done wonders to improve morale among St. Martin’s residents, quelling the most common symptoms of COVID fatigue, including loneliness, stress, anxiousness, and depression.

After several weeks without a single positive COVID test, St. Martin’s is also returning to regular group activities and programming. As residents ease back into normal schedules filled with activities and plenty of social time, hope for a brighter future after a season of struggle has finally arrived.

St. Martin’s is proud to offer a safe, nurturing senior community environment for each of our residents. Please schedule a tour with St. Martin’s in the Pines today to learn more. We look forward to meeting you!
